Welcome to Gantry Cranes Source

The gantry crane is one of the heavy workhorse cranes of the lifting world and they are available to buy, sell or hire through www.gantrycranessource.co.uk.

Gantry cranes can often be seen in shipyards, dockyards and ports where they are used to move heavy loads and containers onto and off ships.

A gantry crane is similar in construction to overhead cranes. The main difference is that in the case of the gantry crane the lifting gear or hoist is located in a trolley that usually suspended underneath a beam or two beams or girders spanning uprights.

Cranes of this type can move at right angles to the direction of the gantry on wheels and in some example the whole is a lightweight structural assembly also on wheels so that it can easily be moved from one location to another. Heavier assemblies can be a greater load-bearing box assembly type mounted on rails.

The most commonly shaped gantry crane assembly looks very similar to a children’s playground swing except that the hoist or lifting gear replaces the swing seat and chain supporting it, of course. An alternative assembly resembles a tripod or Indian tepee structure.

In some cases a gantry crane can be of a fixed height or it can be adjustable.

Manufacturers of gantry cranes include Metro Engineering Industries, Wallace, Abus, Gorbel and Spanco to name but a few.

www.gantrycranessource.co.uk is the place to for gantry cranes.

Gantry cranes, stand alone cranes, crane accessories

Gantry cranes (and overhead cranes) are a type of crane which lift objects with the use of a hoist which is fitted in a trolley and can move horizontally on a rail or pair of rails which are fitted under a beam. A gantry crane, also known as an overhead crane or a suspended crane, has the ends of the supporting beam resting on wheels running on rails at a high level, usually on the parallel side walls of a factory or similar large industrial building. This is so that the whole crane can move the along the whole length of the building while the hoist can be moved to and fro across the width of the building. Some stand alone cranes may have only a fixed gantry, particularly when they are lifting loads such as railway cargoes that are already easily moved beneath them.

Gantry cranes are particularly suited to lifting very heavy objects and huge gantry cranes have been used for shipbuilding where the crane straddles the ship allowing massive objects like the ships’ engines to be lifted and moved over the ship.

Some gantry cranes also run on rubber tyres so that tracks are not needed, and small gantry cranes can be used in workshops, for example for lifting auto mobile engines out of vehicles.

Workstation gantry cranes are used in factories or machine shops to lift and transport smaller items around a working area. Some workstation gantry cranes are equipped with an enclosed track, while others use an I-beam, for the running surface. Typically, workstation gantry cranes are intended to be stationary when loaded, and mobile when unloaded.

Gantry Cranes are commonly found in factory applications such as steel yards. The gantry crane works in a similar way to an overhead bridge crane, but has rails installed on the ground and instead has gantry-style legs to support the crane. Capacities range from 2 to 200 tons. Most are electrically powered and painted yellow.
